Soulzay is a Doomshop records artist based out of Dallas, TX. Soulzay teamed up with Dragg for another project with Dragg producing all the tracks on this 10 track project. Dragg and Soulzay previously collaborated on an EP "Blowin Big Behind Tint" which had 3 tracks. A favorite from that track was 30,000 Feet.
I had previously been intriduced to Soulzay by graphic designer Vibemalls who is a visual artist, photographer, and cover artist for the underground based out of Sacremento, CA. My first Soulzay experience was his project "Still Smokin" which I now own on CD (signed by Soulzay).
This project called "The Slow Burn" has a smooth energy as does a majority of his tracks and this project strays away from the rap vocal chop samples that frequent phonk artists do and has a more emphasis on samples from old funk, jazz, and soul tracks and many tracks have female vocals sampled. My favorite example of a female vocal chop was on "Stay Tru" and Zay speaks on his disdain for corporations with this lyric, "Fuck yo corporate office I would never step my foot in."
Overall Dragg uses more acoustic drums as opposed to normal trap drums and the drum patterns sound more natural as opposed to normal trap or phonk music. This project mixes Phonk and G-Funk successfully which the lyric content residing in the "Lifestyle Rap" category.
This is the least violent Soulzay project and sounds almost nothing like the "Empty Vessel" project he released years ago. I do love that project and I would like to see a mix of that project and this project in a future release by him. Also I would love to see Soulzay do a track with Freddie Gibbs it would be immaculate.
Overall 9/10 tracks get added on the playlist and they will have a 4 month shelf life.
