REVIEW OF SYKO RICH'S "TALES FROM THE BLUNT" TAPE

Updated: Apr 30, 2023

Syko Rich drops “Tales from the Blunt '' a tape produced by J Da Unknown. The intro track has Syko sampling himself and he makes this tape with J Da Unknown as they both from Level 1 Records. The mixing of Syko Rich on this tape is amazing and authentic and is the most authentic recent mix of horrorcore and boom bap. The beats and 808s have a lot of cowbells and Christopher Walken would love this (SNL Reference).

J Da Unknown showed his chemistry with Syko Rich on Black Sheep and this chemistry is present throughout the whole project. There is an emotional showcase of Syko Rich and his stressful relationship with his family. This tape showcases how Syko Rich is one of the realest in the underground.

Syko Rich raps, “All of my I’ve been the motherfuckin Black Sheep” on the track “Black Sheep”. This track is one of his realest tracks and details his issues with the law, family members inability to take care of him, and other issues relating to struggling with drugs and escaping reality. Syko also raps, “Taught myself to be a man and got up off the street” on this song and it overall has an authentic and positive message.

The track “Smokin Bud” is a smoker anthem and is an outstanding track on this project. The structure of the beat is amazing, how the bass cuts on and off is outstanding. The vocal chops of Syko’s lyrics are amazing. The production on this is amazing as well as the production on the “45” track. On this track Syko raps the fastest I have heard from him.

Homicidal Maniyaks is an amazing posse cut track with Halfdeadshogun,$ixfootslim, Dexgod, Slyye, and is produced by J Da Unknown. Slyye is an amazing artist from Misery Mob and HalfdeadShogun is from PhonkHouseRecords. I have interviewed HalfdeadShogun on my podcast. It was a blessing. Syko told me he wanted to do more posse cuts because most good old memphis tracks had 4+ rappers on them and he likes to keep it authentic.

Public Enemy is an emotional sounding banger with motivational and uplifting synths. “Tired of running, part of me just doesn’t give a damn” is a favorite lyric from this song. There is good storytelling in this song.

Dreamin is my favorite song on the project. The bells and synths on this beat are amazing. “Life is better when I’m fuckin dreamin” is an amazing lyric from Syko Rich. I can relate to this lyric on so many levels. I am always caught up in my vision for the future and not now. The song also touches on the familial neglect Syko Rich dealt with as a kid. This is his most emotional complex song and I enjoy this more than Black Sheep but these are equally authentic in sound and lyrics.

Overall this project is a 10/10. I would add all 10 tracks on my playlist with a 6 month shelf life. One of the best projects of 2021.
