"OLD" FILM HAS AN INTERESTING LORE AND GOOD ENDING, BUT CHARACTERS ARE WILD (ANALYSIS)

Updated: Apr 30, 2023

"Old" is an M. Night Shyamalan thriller/horror film released July 23, 2021. This is a film about multiple families and couples that go to a private beach on a resort and get stranded on this beach as well as their bodies start to age rapidly. The aging of their bodies causes a horrifying effect on the characters leading to an overall interesting horror film.

This film has a good setup that is not too long as well as the runtime is not that long. This makes for a large chunk of the film being the horror. The dialogue is a bit clunky but that might be due to the characters ages in the beginning. The way the characters piece together information is well done because the realizations to not happen all at once.

The overall reason I enjoy this film so much is because the villian is not one entity it is science and nature. I mainly dislike many horror films due to me being not a fan of supernatural villians, so therefore this was my cup of tea. When the cause of the horror on the beach is revealed at the end, you realize the big picture and I enjoyed the reveal at the end.

This film also was very futuristic in a sense and gave me black mirror vibes to it. There is a certain brand of horror that I see in many recent films and shows that I enjoy. I see the same interesting feel of the science oriented villian in the most recent "The Invisible Man' adaptation by Leigh Whannell, and in episodes of Black Mirror specifically, the "USS Callister" episode.

I think it is safe to say that Science Fiction horror, is on the rise again. It is time to be rid of the supernatural jumpscare mess, and it is good to see M. Night thinking in the future.

Overall I would give this film a "worthy investment of time" on the watchability scale. I would recommend it to a lot of people. Enjoy the film if you haven't seen it yet!
