Recently I have been asking myself the question, Is music becoming more Loud and Distorted? A lot of the latest popular underground music is more fried and more loud and distorted. This is evident in witch house, phonk, and trap metal scenes. The amount of touring artists who have mainly distorted and loud music is a lot. You have Freddie Dredd, SXMPRA, Playa Misery, Scarlxrd, etc. This goes to show that music is going in this direction. We are straying away from a cleaner mix to something different in the underground. I think it won't be as big as mainstream music, but the fanbase will be cult like ICP and Three 6 Mafia. While Three 6 Mafia is mainstream, their fanbase is selective to people who like gangsta rap and horrorcore, and this depends on a multitude of factors for this to apply to these new artists. Their groups such as Doomshop Records, Schemaposse, Haunted Mound, have a lot of artists who practice the same mixing. However, most of them are not the OGs of this sound. This stems from when trap metal was just becoming popular with zillakami and bones and Ghostemane. However, it was a much cleaner mix due to the time most of this music was released. Legendary 90s artist Koopsta Kn**** is known for sampling metallica and trap metal, and the mix of these genres has origins in rap from the jump. Punk, black metal, and noise have had an influence in rap with artists such as SpaceGhostPurrp, Sematary, Yung Lean, Pouya, Jasiah, Scarlxrd, etc. This has further promoted a more distorted sound and fuzzy noise to this. I love to see music evolve in this direction and stray away from the boring mix that is in most mainstream music. In modern music groups such as Crucified Click, the mix that is on most tracks is more lo fi, and gritty. This makes the song sound more vintage, and interesting. The thing is this: if the lyrics are real, gritty, and horrifying, so will the mixing be. This is why underground music is becoming more fucking fried.
