A look back at "Tiger" by Thaiboy Digital

Updated: Apr 30, 2023

Within the fast few weeks, Thaiboy Digital, Drain Gang singer and rapper, has turned 27 and is going on tour with Drain Gang. There has been a re-release of his debut mixtape Tiger on vinyl as well as a a merch line for the mixtape. This mixtape had the classic Yung Lean collaboration produced by Whitearmor, "Diamonds". This song is one of the most well done tracks by all 3 artists and is out of this world. The synths sound like I am watching a spaceship leave the fucking earth. The way the percussion filters in and out and the structure of the song is immaculate. This could be said for many songs on this project as this is the second song on the project. "Haters Broke" is an amazing intro and the buildup is amazing. The production on this mixtape is entirely done by Whitearmor and I would argue this is the best album he has produced (yes I think this is better than "Starz" by Yung Lean). I mainly say this because each strong has about a 45 second buildup and is less focused on traditional trap percussion. The percussion is mainly edm inspired and some tracks barely have any percussion in them and focus on Thaiboy rapping and singing over synth melodies which are positive, uplifting and are memorable. The most well structured song is Gtblessgo which is a collaboration with Bladee and the hook can be annoying by Thaiboy but it is a crew oriented song about suppressing urges, staying with your crew, and being a shy person. The most memorable synths come off on "All My Life" with a panning pluck oriented synth lead melody that is expertly crafted and a little delay is dabbled on and off by Whitearmor in the mix and the counter melody serves as help to the buildup to the beat drop, which is fantastically done as all melodies are converged together in a masterpiece of a beat. A mixture of a saw and whistle sounding synth can be heard later in the beat, which is some amazing extra sauce to add to an already amazing beat as Thaiboy Digital floats on top of this beat. No1 is the best written song on the album which a flute or saw synth buildup, the buildup synth is off beat but since nobody raps on the build up it is not an issue and sounds like an ambient track and then Thaiboy comes on to rap and sing over a different melody a minute into the song. Lyrics like "You could stab me twice and I would never bleed" are metaphors to a woman being his number 1 and that no matter what she does, he will always love her. This is an emotional masterpiece along with every song on the album. There is not one song on this album that is bad I am just happy this exists.
